Volkswagen celebrates Golf GTI’s 50th early with special Edition 50

Besides the regular GTI, the Edition 50 also becomes the most powerful Golf GTI ever made with more power than the GTI Clubsport.

Volkswagen is getting a head start on the Golf GTI’s 50th anniversary with the debut of a limited run Edition 50, a fiery celebration of five decades of hot hatch legacy, revealed just ahead of the 24 Hours of the Nürburgring this past weekend.

Marking the most powerful Golf GTI ever built, the Edition 50 becomes the new benchmark for performance, even outpacing the GTI Clubsport. Featuring the same 2.0 TSI engine found in the Golf R and GTI, it adopts the more aggressive drive unit of the Golf 8.5 GTI Clubsport. The result is a formidable 239 kW of power, 44 kW more than the standard Golf 8.5 GTI and just 6 kW shy of the Golf R, alongside 420 Nm of torque, on par with the R and 50 Nm more than the regular GTI.

That power translates to serious performance: 0 to 100 km/h in 5.5 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 270 km/h. The GTI Edition 50 is also the fastest GTI to ever lap the Nürburgring, clocking in at a blistering seven minutes and 46.13 seconds.

Though it still sends all its power to the front wheels via a seven-speed DSG transmission, the Edition 50 doesn’t just rely on extra power to make an impact. It receives a 15 mm lowered ride height, retuned steering, an enhanced Dynamic Chassis Control system and an upgraded XDS electronic front differential for a sharper, more responsive drive.

Buyers can also spec the optional GTI Performance package for even more thrills. This adds another 5 mm drop in ride height (totaling 20 mm lower than the standard GTI), 19 inch Warmenau forged alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza semi slick tyres, each wheel weighing 8 kg less than the standard version, and a titanium Akrapovič exhaust system, shedding an additional 11 kg.

Visual upgrades set the Edition 50 apart, with gloss black accents on the door sills and mirror caps, black exhaust tips, red detailing on the wheels, a unique GTI 50 badge on the roof spoiler, and a striking black stripe fading into red along the base of the doors.

Inside, the sportiness continues with red seatbelts, GTI 50 logos on the steering wheel and treadplates, Velour trimmed seats with a check pattern in red, white and green, GTI embroidery on the front seatbacks, a gloss black centre console and red alloy pedals, all combining to deliver a high performance cockpit with a celebratory flair.

The Edition 50 will be available in five exterior colours: Pure White, Grenadilla Black, Moonstone Grey, and two exclusive shades, Tornado Red and Moss Green, not available on the regular GTI.

Now open for orders, deliveries for the GTI Edition 50 are expected to begin in the first quarter of 2026. Unfortunately for South African fans, this high powered celebration is unlikely to reach local shores anytime soon, as the country’s current fuel quality restrictions continue to delay the introduction of the updated GTI and Golf R until at least 2027.
